This was a well-written and fascinating exposition of the use of submarines, by both sides, in the first world war. It describes the development of submarine warfare and the problems and peril faced by the men who sailed in them. It taught this ignoramus much that he had not imagined about the operation of early submarines. The treatment is very unbiased between the two sides and shows much sympathy for the crews irrespective of their navy. This may upset readers who regard most U-boat captains as war criminals but reflects the author's own experience as a submariner.
