A pleasant enough read.

Very well written, helped very much by the author having excellent powers of description, especially of places his submarine visited. I bought this book only because one of my late mother's cousins served on a T-class submarine in the Far East (HMS Thorough actually) and was most interested to find out more of his life on board. Reluctantly, I have to say, the author, not sure if intentionally, described it all almost as a travelogue without conveying as much as I had expected of the nerve-racking moments all 60 men of these subs must have endured during war-time, possibly weekly. It was no walk in the park, as I knew from my relative, but even he kept much to himself. The author's attitudes show up as very much dated nowadays, almost one of the "jolly good show" brigade. Also a couple of racist phrases, especially when he described his experiences fighting the Japanese. For any future reprints, these phrases should be edited out or suitably toned down. These references aside, worth buying the book as it does give a fair insight into life onboard a submarine back then, at least for the Officers..

Sparse operational detail

I realise that the original book was written in the wartime era and updated in peacetime, having read other factual submarine stories and having served in submarines myself in peacetime, I thought there was little factual detail. For anyone not knowledgeable in submarine warfare, this book is a good starter and they may want to go onto other true submarine stories.
