Career information

Paul Stamford Thirsk was born on 17 Oct 1918. He joined the Blue Funnel Line after finishing Nautical College but was listed as RNR officer. He was called upon when the war started and volunteered for submarines.

On 3 October 1940 he was wounded in the leg by gunfire from a German aircraft while serving on board HMS Talisman and spent some time in the hospital before joining P-42 / Unbroken for her commissioning later in 1941.

In 1942 Thirsk went out to the Mediterranean in the submarine P-42 (later renamed Unbroken) and joined the 10th flotilla at Malta. He went out on 12 war patrols, first as navigation officer and then as first lieutenant under the famous commander Alastair Mars.

In 1943 Thirsk came to Britain to go through his submarine commander training.

After the war he joined the Overseas Civil Service and was posted to Nigeria. After suffering fro tuberculosis in 1952 he joined the Colonial Office as principal. From 1955 to 1963 he held Colonial Service posts in Northern Rhodesia. His colonial days came to an end in 1966 when he was deputy Governor of British Guiana before its independence.

He got married in 1961 to Daphne Coster and they had two sons.
