Destroyer HMS Witch (D 89)


11 Apr 1943
The British merchant Empire Whimbrel is torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-181 about 420 nautical miles south-west of Freetown in position 02º31'N, 15º55'W. The British destroyers HMS Wolverine (Lt. I.M. Clegg, RN) and HMS Witch (Lt.Cdr. S.R.J. Woods, RNR) later pick up 53 survivors.

6 May 1944
The German submarine U-473 was sunk at 0200 hrs in the North Atlantic west south-west of Ireland, in position 49º29'N, 21º22'W, by depth charges from the British sloops HMS Starling (Capt. F.J. Walker, DSO and Bar, RN), HMS Wren (Lt.Cdr. S.R.J. Woods, RNR) and HMS Wild Goose (Lt.Cdr. D.E.G. Wemyss, DSC and Bar, RN).

10 Aug 1944
The German submarine U-608 was sunk in the Bay of Biscay near La Rochelle, in position 46º30'N, 03º08'W, by depth charges from the British sloop HMS Wren (Lt.Cdr. S.R.J. Woods, DSC, RNR) and by depth charges from a British Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 53/C).
