The British merchant Ruckinge is torpedoed and damaged west of Lisbon, Portugal in position 38º20'N, 17º15'W by the German submarine U-108. HMS Samphire (Lt.Cdr. F.T. Renny, DSC, RNR) later sinks the damaged ship with gunfire.
21 Dec 1941
The German submarine U-567 was sunk in the North Atlantic north-east of the Azores, in position 44º02'N, 20º10'W, by depth charges from the British sloop HMS Deptford (Lt.Cdr. H.R. White, RN) and the British corvette HMS Samphire (Lt.Cdr. F.T. Renny, DSC, RNR).
14 Dec 1942
The British merchant Edencrag is torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-443 west of Algiers in position 35º49'N, 01º25'W. HMS Samphire (Lt.Cdr. F.T. Renny, DSC, RNR) later picks up 9 survivors.
30 Jan 1943
HMS Zetland (Lt. J.V. Wilkinson, RN) part of the same convoy escort as HMS Samphire (Lt.Cdr. F.T. Renny, DSC, RNR) arrived back at the scene of the sinking after an asdic search for the submarine of about 20 minutes. They found men in the water, shouting and screaming. Zetland launched a boat but picked up only four survivors from HMS Samphire who were landed at Bone.
