Career information

William Jeffery started his sea fareing career with the Merchant Navy on the 'Glen' line in 1931. Shortly afterwards they were taken over by 'Blue Funnel'.

Early in 1939 when war looked likely he decided that he would prefer to sail in a ship with an armament. He joined the RNR and trained at Devonport Dockyard. He initially served as an officer on a number of Armed Merchant Cruisers in the Atlantic but transferred to the North Sea where he was married whilst stationed at Harwich with Cpt Garwood being his best man. He only commanded HMS Shearwater for a few months before resting as a result of the strain from that theatre of war from the constant night activities of this class of 9 corvettes that were bigger than teh Flower class against the E boats in the North Sea. He was posted to HMS Plym whilst she was in construction. He served as an officer on HMS Plym until a severe bought of Tonsilitis Whilst the Ship was in South Africa, lead to him returning to the UK on HMS Plym as a passenger. Posted ashore for the remainder of the war he continued in the RNR as part of the Merchant Ship Control section through the 50's and 60's having retrained as school master post 1945.

He passed away peacefully in Somerset on 26th December 1990 aged 75.
