Career information

Name: CROSS, Fergus Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force/ Royal Canadian Navy Reserve Rank: RAF - Flight Lieutenant/ RCNVR - Lieutenant Commander Date of Birth: November 20, 1914 - Ilford, Essex, England Date of Death: October 7, 1971 - Lachine, PQ, Canada Fergus joined the Royal Air Force as a navigator in Bomber Command. This led to his posting to No. 33 Air Navigation School at Mount Hope Air Station in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1941 as a navigation instructor as part of "The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan". In the Spring of 1942 Fergus received notice of being posted to Pennfield Ridge in New Brunswick as head of the Navigation Department. This base was giving advanced training to crews involved in airborne search and destruction of enemy U-Boats. Fergus was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and as time passed it looked like he would have to return to duties in Britain. Rather than have this happen and be separated from his family he applied in January of 1943 for transfer to the Royal Canadian Navy. The RCN was desperate at this time for corvette skippers and Fergus was imminently qualified as he had received his Master Mariner’s Certificate in February 1940. He was soon accepted and told to report for sea duty as First Officer on HMCS Chicoutimi. In late summer of 1943 Fergus left as Captain on HMCS Chicoutimi and took over command of HMCS Pictou. Pictou was paid off July 12, 1945 The ship lay at anchor in St. Margaret’s Bay off Seabright, Nova Scotia while a skeleton crew removed all the items required by the RCN.
