Submarine HNMS K XVI ()


18 Nov 1941
HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) departed Surabaya for Tarakan together with HrMs K XIV (Lt.Cdr. P.A. Mulock van der Vlies Bik, RNN) and HrMs K XV (Lt.Cdr. Baron C.W.T. van Boetzelaer, RNN) (this is the 3rd Dutch submarine division). They arrived in the Tarakan area on 22 November 1941.

8 Dec 1941
HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) and the other submarines of the 3rd Dutch submarine division (HrMs K XIV (Lt.Cdr. P.A. Mulock van der Vlies Bik, RNN) and HrMs K XV (Lt.Cdr. Baron C.W.T. van Boetzelaer, RNN)) patrolled in the Northern entrance to the Makassar Strait.

11 Dec 1941
HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) and the other submarines of the 3rd Dutch submarine division (HrMs K XIV (Lt.Cdr. P.A. Mulock van der Vlies Bik, RNN) and HrMs K XV (Lt.Cdr. Baron C.W.T. van Boetzelaer, RNN)) are ordered to proceed towards the Java Sea. This was later changed to the South China Sea.

14 Dec 1941
HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) arrived at Surabaya.

15 Dec 1941
After taking on board fuel, supplies and having some small repairs done to the boat, HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) departed Surabaya for the South China Sea.

24 Dec 1941
HrMs K XVI (Lt.Cdr. L.J. Jarman, RNN) torpedoed and sank the Japanese destroyer Sagiri (offsite link) off Kuching, Borneo.

K XVI reported this sinking by signal. She had 8 torpedoes remaining after this attack. Dutch naval command signalled the boat to return to Surabaya but nothing more was heard or seen from K XVI.
