Career information

John Richard Corlett READER the son of John William READER and Margaret Jane CORLETT was born on the 5th of August 1900 in Liverpool. He married Ellen PORTER, the daughter of George PORTER and Elizabeth Ann CORNALL, in 1919 in Fleetwood. Ellen was born on the 31st of October 1901 in Fleetwood. They had four children all born at 34 Radcliffe Road in Fleetwood, Lancashire. In World War 1 John Richard Corlett READER was a seaman in the Royal Navy on minesweepers.

After the war during the nineteen thirties he was unemployed for two years during which time he was a bookies' runner and took part in street fights, both of which were illegal! He was fortunate to give some assistance to one of the Melling family as a result Melling Trawlers Ltd employed him as bosun on the “Lizzie Melling” PN 45. Around 1938 he was made skipper for the first time of the “Alonzo” H887 which, with the “Gozo”, had been on the scrap heap for ten years. Probably in 1939 he was made skipper of the steam trawler the “Noreen Mary” this was just before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Naval Reserve on Mine Sweeper Trawlers.

Known post war trawler After the Second World War he moved to Lowestoft and became skipper of one of Boston Trawlers Ltd. diesel trawlers the “Lowestoft Lady “LT 247. On Saturday the 4th of February 1956 “Lowestoft Lady” starred in the B.B.C. Television programme “Saturday-Night Out - Goes to Sea”. Robert Beatty reported on the fishermen of Lowestoft, with Bob Danvers-Walker on board at sea. Had both legs amutated late in life due a hereditory vein problem. John Richard Corlett READER died on the 14th of April 1973 at Ipswich in Suffolk.
