| History | Built as German Tijuca for Hamburg-Südamerikanische DG, Hamburg. In August 1914, she was interned in Recife, Pernambuco. On 1 Jun, 1917, seized by the Brazilian Government after several Brazilian merchants had been torpedoed by German U-boats and renamed Baependy. | ||
| Notes on loss | At 00.12 hours on 16 Aug, 1942, the neutral Baependy (Master João Soares Da Silva) was hit on the starboard side by two torpedoes from U-507 and sank in less than 5 minutes about 20 miles off Aracaju. The master, 54 crew members and 215 passengers (among them the commander Major Landerico Lima, 16 officers and 125 ratings of the embarked 7th Artillery Regiment) were lost. 18 crew members and 18 passengers survived, most of them rescued themselves on a lifeboat that floated free and seven others clung to wreckage and managed to reach the nearby coast. The sinking of five Brazilian ships by U-507 with over 500 casualties within two days, led to the Brazilian declaration of war against Germany on 22 Aug, 1942. | ||
