| History | Commissioned in December 1941, HMCS Charlottetown (K 244) was stationed at Halifax as part of Western Local Escort Force (WLEF), later transferred to the Gulf Escort Force due to the increased U-boat activity in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. | ||
| Notes on event | At 12.58 hours on 11 September 1942, HMCS Charlottetown (K 244) (T/LtCdr J.W. Bonner, RCNR) was hit on the starboard side by two torpedoes from U-517 and sank about 5 miles off Cap-Chat in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The corvette had escorted convoy SQ-35 to Rimouski and was returning to Gaspe alone when attacked. The commander and five ratings were lost and four ratings later died of wounds. The survivors were picked up by HMCS Clayoquot (J 174) (T/Lt H.E. Lade, RCNR). | ||
