Notes on loss

At 21.45 hours on 22 Oct, 1942, U-443 fired a spread of two torpedoes at the convoy ON-139 southwest of Fastnet and heard two hits but no detonations after 1 minutes 14 seconds. These were probably duds. At 21.48 hours, the U-boat fired another spread of two torpedoes, which sank the Winnipeg II. Two minutes later the stern torpedo was fired, which damaged the Donax.

The Donax (Master John Murray Cuthill) remained afloat and was taken in tow by the rescue tugs HMS Nimble (W 123) and HMS Marauder (W 98) (Lt F. Jennings). But the tanker sank in 48°04N/24°41W on 29 October.
The master, 54 crew members and eight gunners were rescued. 38 survivors were picked up by HMCS Drumheller (K 167) (Lt G.H. Griffiths) and landed at St.Johns. Ten survivors were picked up by a British destroyer and 15 survivors by HMS Nimble (W 123) and landed at Greenock.
