| Notes on loss | At 11.42 hours on 4 Nov, 1942, the unescorted Hai Hing (Master Erling Reeder Hannevig) was hit by one torpedo from U-178 in the #3 hold on the starboard side and sank immediately seven miles from Inhaca lighthouse near Lourenço Marques. There was no time for the 60 crew members and seven British gunners to launch the lifeboats. The master, four officers, one gunner and 19 Chinese crewmen were lost. Three Norwegians, eight British and 31 Chinese survivors clung to rafts and debris, until they were picked up by the Portuguese tug Chaimite, which had been notified by the lighthouse, and landed at Lourenço Marques. | ||
