| Notes on loss | At 08.27 hours on 10 Nov, 1942, the unescorted K.G. Meldahl (Master Torjus E. Johnsen) was torpedoed and sunk by U-181 off East London, South Africa. Two men died on watch below. The master, 27 crew members and two gunners abandoned ship in two lifeboats, which were later spotted by an aircraft. The survivors were picked up three days after the sinking by a minesweeper and taken to Port Elisabeth. | ||
