| Notes on event | At 23.17 hours on 28 Dec 1942, U-406 (Dieterichs) fired two FAT and three T-3 torpedoes at convoy ONS-154 northwest of the Azores and reported two ships sunk and two ships damaged, but in fact three ships, Baron Cochrane (station #12), Lynton Grange (station #22) and Zarian (station #13) were hit and damaged. The Baron Cochrane (Master Leslie Anderson) was then missed by a coup de grâce from U-591 (Zetzsche), but sunk by a coup de grâce from U-123 at 00.53 hours on 29 December. The chief engineer and one gunner were the only casualties of 38 crewmen and six gunners. The survivors were picked up by HMS Milne (G 14) (Capt I.M.R. Campbell, DSO, RN), which was herself unsuccessful attacked by U-435 (Strelow) at 00.55 hours. They were brought to Ponta Delgada, Azores. | ||
