Born as Carl Edward Rahtkens, became Lieutenant in RNR and commander of the destroyer HMS Arun on 25 July 1917. He officially changed his name to Charles Edward Rathkins in September 1917 and retired as Captain, but after surviving the sinking of Lochavon he returned to active duty in the Naval Control Service.
