Personal information
Son of Olaf Martini and Katrine Birkeland; husband of Lillemor Birkeland, of Vestre Moland. Bjarne Birkeland had been Mate aboard the Norwegian steam merchant Imo that collided with the French freighter Mont-Blanc in Halifax Harbour on 6 December 1917. The cargo of high explosives carried by the latter subsequently blew up in what became known as the "Halifax Explosion".
