Personal information

Bon E. Maloy feared an attack on the unescorted Cape Decision, requisitioned cases of canned food and stored them in the lifeboat he was assigned to. After his ship was sunk, the U-boat surfaced and questioned the survivors in two lifeboats, asking the whereabouts of the captain. No one would betray him, saying he must have gone down with the ship. Failing to question the captain to learn of the ship’s destination and cargo, the U-boat commander, to the relief of the sailors, stated that the cargo ship was doing its job of delivering war goods and that he was doing his job in sinking it. He then gave them directions to sail southwest toward Barbados or Trinidad before the U-boat left the area. Bon Maloy was in the boat which made landfall at Saint Barthelemy 14 days later.
