Notes on event

At 23.10 hours on 22 January 1942 the unescorted Athelcrown (Master Isaac Burkhill), dispersed from convoy ON-56, was torpedoed and sunk by U-82 southeast of Cape Race. Five crew members were lost. The master, 26 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the British steam merchant Argos Hill and landed at Halifax. Twelve crew members found the abandoned, drifting wreck of the Diala, which had been torpedoed on 15 January by U-553 (Thurmann) in 47°28N/39°19W. The men remained on board for eight days before they were rescued by the Swedish motor tanker Saturnus that later landed four injured men on the Faroe Islands, while the other eight had been taken off by HMS Dahlia (K 59) (T/Lt M.S. Work, RNR) on 9 February and landed at Londonderry. The wreck of the Diala was sunk by U-587 (Borcherdt) on 23 March.
