Notes on event

On 19 June 1943 the Pelotaslóide (Master Jony Pereira Máximo) arrived at Trinidad in convoy GAT-68, but the authorities did not allow her to join another convoy because she had not been able to maintain the minimum speed of 6 knots and made excessive smoke. On 27 June, the single ship then continued her voyage to Recife escorted by Jacuí (CS 57) (Capitão-Tenente Carlos Roberto Perez Paquet) and Jundiaí (CS 58) (Capitão-Tenente Pedro Borges Lynch).

At 16.00 hours on 4 July, the ships arrived off Salinas and while the escorts went to Belém for refueling, the merchant ship waited for a harbour tug to be towed to a pier until her escorts returned. At 17.45 hours, the Pelotaslóide was hit on the starboard side by two torpedoes from U-590 and sank five miles north of Salinas, Brazil. The escorts immediately returned to the area, dropped depth charges on several sonar contacts and Jundiaí (CS 58) then picked up the survivors (five of them wounded).
