| Notes on loss | At 01.30 hours on 29 Nov, 1939, the Ionian (Master William Smith) in convoy FN-43 struck a mine, laid on 21 November by U-20 1.5 miles 132° from Newarp Lightship. The ship was abandoned 4 miles 340° from the lightship and sank in 52°45´15N/01°56´15E. The master and 36 crew members were picked up by the HMS Hastings (L 27) (Cdr E.H. Vincent) and landed at South Shields. | ||
