Notes on event

At 22.43 hours on 22 January 1942 the unescorted Innerøy (Master Einar Winsnes) was hit on the starboard side near #7 tank by a torpedo from U-553, caught fire and sank. The master, 32 crew members and three gunners were lost. Five survivors were picked up from a lifeboat 15 hours after the attack by the Empire Amethyst, which had come across two empty lifeboats from the tanker before locating the survivors and were landed at Halifax.
