| Notes on loss | At 23.07 hours on 6 Mar, 1943, the unescorted Thorstrand (Master Anthonius Stave) was hit on the port side at #3 hatch by one torpedo from U-172 about 550 miles west of the Azores. Four crew members were lost. The master, 31 crew members, eight passengers and three gunners abandoned ship in three lifeboats and headed for the Azores. Later one of the boats had to be given up due to leaks and the motorboat went ahead with three injured men on board. On 14 March, the men in the motorboat were picked up by an American warship and landed at Casablanca after 7 days. The remaining lifeboat arrived off Flores on 17 March and was towed into Lajes by a motorboat from the harbour. | ||
