Decommissioned at Philadelphia on 7 July 1922
Converted into a high speed transport in 1939
Gregory was reclassified APD-3 on 2 August 1940
Recommissioned on November 4 1940
USS Gregrory (Lt Cmdr Harry Frederick Bauer) was sunk by Japanese destroyers off Guadalcanal in position 09º20'S, 160º01'E; 22 of the crew were killed and 43 wounded amongst those killed was the Commanding officer. The survivors were rescued by the USS Manley.
