History

USS Grenadier (Lt.Cdr. John Allison Fitzgerald) was hit by depth charges from a Japanese aircraft in the Straits of Malacca and heavily damaged. The boat surfaced the next day after attempted repairs and was scuttled in sight of two oncoming Japanese vessels in position 06º30'N, 97º40'E. 74 survivors. All but 4 survived a tough time in Japanese hands.

After an uneventful 3th war patrol, which ended at Fremantle, Austalia, USS Grenadier (Lt.Cdr. Bruce L. Carr) departed and commenced her 4th war patrol and was ordered to lay a minefield off Haiphong, Indochina once completed then patrol in the South China Sea.

Grenadier (Lt.Cdr. B.L. Carr) lays mines in the Tonkin Gulf off Haiphong, Indochina.

12 Nov 1942
