HistorySunk off Dakar on 24 September 1940 by the British destroyer HMS Fortune. Ajax had left harbor in an attempt to attack the Anglo-FNFL forces offshore, but was detected on sonar, depth charges, forced to the surface and finally sunk by gunfire shortly after 0700 hrs.
