Decommissioned on 7 December 1942. Recommissioned on 16 October 1940. USS R-12 (Lt.Cdr. E.E. Shelby, USN) sank during torpedo trials south of Key West in position 24°24.30'N, 81°38.30'W. 42 men died, including Brazilian observers. There were 5 survivors, the Commanding Officer, an other officer (Lt.(j.g.) W.D. Whetstone) and 3 enlisted men.
