There is a wonderful on-line naval history resource that I thought members of this forum would find potentially useful. An American company www.fold3.com specializes in digitizing military, naval and aviation documents from the U.S. National Archives. Fold3 operates a subscription service with the documents available over the web. They have a wide variety of U.S. military records from different time periods but what I have made extensive use of is the Royal Navy’s Admiralty War Diary 1939-1945. This war diary is a compilation of enormous numbers of messages sent between various high ranking Royal Navy officers regarding a wide variety of topics. Among the most common types of messages were announcements that certain ships had departed from or arrived at a particular port, or been damaged or sunk. There are very large numbers of messages concerning the Atlantic submarine war. Many Allied escort vessels and merchant ships are mentioned by name. Individual U-boats are mentioned by number in May-June 1945 as they were sailed to the UK for surrender. This immense document with thousands of pages can be fully explored using the website’s search function. There is a free seven day trial available.

HMS Torbay (T Class) 1945 (1 reply)

Good morning from Australia. I was very impressed with the details, and the presentation, of the page [uboat.net]. Thanks you for all the work.

I am researching an able seaman who was one of the crew of this sub 9HMS Torbay) from July 44 to Nov 45.

The page quoted has details from the ships log for the time my AB was aboard, and one portion covers in detail a special operation - the landing of some canoes near Phuket. It then goes on the mention 4 other special operations, all of which are marked as 'no further details available'.

I am interested in finding out more of these special operations. To this end I have a person who will be visiting London in September. He is the son of the AB, but has no experience in doing research (unlike me, who has a moderate amount, but I am not going). If/when we find out more, we will be offering the information to your organisation so you can incorporate it into the history of the sub.

My questions are:

1. Would we find out more info if we get access to the log book of the Torbay, or is everything already posted to the page?

2. Is it possible the missions are covered in the Special Operations Executive records that are in the National Archives? We know the date and the place (as we know where the sub was from the log book).

3. If the answer to 2 is Yes - can anyone advise the best way to deal with the Archives, remembering that there will be a person in London in Sept, but with a limited amount of time. I am more than happy to do as much from here as possible prio to the visit.

Many thanks for your time and effort. You certainly made a son of a now dead sailor happy.

Royal Marine Bandsman W (Bill) Evans) RMBX1509

My uncle George Lloyd was on the HMS Trinidad when she was torpedoed, and he was the last man out of the TS where 17 men died. I have recently found some letters to George from another Bandie, Bill Evans RMBX1509. They were written from various places, Scarborough and Nuneaton, and various times - one a few weeks after the ship was sunk, and also a few years later in 1945. Bill Evans asks if George has come out of his coma, and he mentions some other musicians: Becket, and Sam, and the Heybrook Barracks band. If any of the Evans family would like copies of the letters please contact me through www.georgelloyd.com and I will send them. I also have photographs of the Trinidad band at Heybrook Barracks while the ship was being fitted out. William Lloyd. (PS More about George Lloyd at www.georgelloyd.com)

I am trying to trace any information on my uncle's (leading seaman John Francis Bewley) wartime naval service and in particular a Motor Minesweeper that he served aboard.

When I was a lad he told me that he had been aboard this vessel and it had been bombed in a canal and sunk and for this he had been awarded thirteen days survival leave. I have a model (sadly in disrepair) of this ship, made in some white wood about twelve inches long, that he told me was made by a blind Dutchman. I also have what appears to be wartime book (the cover is blue paper, not a hard back) with photographs of all the fleet at that time. It includes Motor Minesweeper 206 which looks the same as my model.

These are all the clues I have so if anyone can help me to unravel this mystery I would be very grateful.

I am a model maker and wish to confirm DM-29's Ms.22 or Ms.22 Revised color scheme from Dec.1944 through Feb.1946. DM-29 Left Pearl Harbor Des.44 the participated @ IWO JIMA, Okinawa, China and departed PTO Jan.17, 1946 arriving back in San Francisco, Feb.46. Photos show her @ IWO JIMA in Ms.22(problably painted @ Pearl before departing for IWO. Wiley built in Bethlehem Shipyard, Staten Is.,NY 1944 leaving with Ms.32/25d. Since she departed Pearl for IWO and photos show her @ IWO in Ms.22, presumption Pearl allow repaint. Buships memo date 20 Feb. 45 revises Ms.22 colors. Since Wiley was in action at this time and continued in action through end of 1945, did she have time/port to repaint per Ms.22 Revised?? Reading her DANFIS, it doesn't appear she did have time for repaint. See www.navsource.org "homeward bound" 1946 photo showing her still in either Ms.22 or Ms.22 Revised.

Please, please, can anybody help me on this matter?

Thanks much

Kindly note that I have some additional information concerning this small vessel to that already posted under the Allied Warships Section of this site. This relates to the port movements of the vessel prior to its transfer to the Greek Navy. These were obtained from the Royal Navy Historical Department. I am more than happy to pass this information on. Please let me know should you be interested.
I am trying to obtain as much information as possible concerning the activities of this vessel particularly during its time in the Far East when it was based in Colombo. This period of time would I believe have coincided with the Japanese air attacks on Sri Lanka (then Ceylon)

I should be grateful for any information about this vessel that would assist me in my research on the war service of my uncle, W M Kilshaw.
Some sources list him as from the aircraft carrier HMS EAGLE but I believe he was on special service with HMS DOLPHIN II and actually killed on 31.05.1941 on a Greek caique while escaping from Crete.

Hello,
my name is Simone and I'm writing You from Rome, Italy.
Since a couple of years I'm working on an historyc
research on a small ship, now a know wreck, in Sardinia (west of La Maddalena Island).

I'm quite sure the ship is the "HMS Santa" a minesweeping
whaler mined and sunk in november 1943 (at least 19 died).
Searching on uboua.net site
I've also found a page dedicated to this ship:

What I would really need is the
name of the submarine that laid the mines
then hit by the HMS Santa.
Is it German or British ?

I cannot find documents reporting this
submarine (allied or German) and/or information related to the mine
field.

I hope you will be able to help me finding what
I consider really precious infos.
I thank you all in advance.

Best regards
