The Uboats have they sunk ships in this area (Canada / USA) during the WWI ?

According to Joe R, Uboats did sink ships off the northeastern coast of the USA and Canada. Among them was the U53 sinking 5 ships in 1916. U117, U140, 151 and U156 also sank ships. Do you have the exact date and name of ships sunk by each Uboats ?

Thank you very much.
It was apparently part of a journal entitled "Schiffbau" published in 1919 and the author is Friedrich Scheurer.
Several WWI U-Boat books and articles that I have found cite this particular article as a reference but I cannot seem to find it anywhere.

I've been doing on and off research for a piece of historical fiction set on a WWI u-boat. Some time ago I'd bookmarked the WWI crew lists page at [www.ubootwaffe.net] since it was valuable information I had been unable to find anywhere else. It listed the entire crew of individual u-boats, what their positions were, and when they died if the information was known.

Sadly, I've recently discovered that [www.ubootwaffe.net] has shut down. There is a link to a new site that has archived the WW2 crew lists, but the WWI list is nowhere to be found.

Would anyone happen to know if that information is still archived somewhere (in German is okay as long as it's online) or a way I might be able to contact either Jörn Jensen (who I believe is the person who compiled the information) or the former ubootwaffe.net admin?

I know this is not that busy a forum, so I set this topic to send me an e-mail alert for any replies. Even if this post is several months old with zero replies when you see it, if you have information please reply so I can check up on this.
The attack attributed to U 61's sinking by P-Boat PC 51 on March 22nd, 1918 in fact was against UC 56 (Kiesewetter), which was badly shaken, but survived of course.

Another one for the database:

UB 78 (Oblt.z.S. Stosberg) on 21.03.1918 in the forenoon passed St. Abbs Head and went along the southern coast of the Firth of Forth up to Bass Rock, than at 19:15h they surfaced again and left the coast.

than, at 19:40h:

Lloyds War Losses gives the clue, despite I haven't seen files from TNA yet:

21.03.1918 damaged STRATHEARN (trawler), 152 tons, about 16 miles E. by S. of May Isld., arrd. Granton - fishing

Despite this entry leading to the assumption that this was an civilian fishing trawler, the STRATHEARN is listed in Dittmar/Colledge as an Admiralty trawler, hired up to 1919.

Does erased from ship hulls, the names of Allied merchant ships during WWI? (5 replies)

Greetings to all.
Does anyone know if the Allied ships and particularly the French, erased the names of the ship on the sides of the bow, during the First World War?
I've been diving in some Allied merchant shipwrecks, sunk by German submarines in the Catalan coast and I could not find any names on the hull of ships. This makes me think that maybe there was some instruction to not identify the merchant, in its routes, and the entrances and exits of ports.
I have not been able to find any documented information on this, although it is true that, to prevent espionage activities in Spanish ports was prohibited to register the names of the ships in their scales, during the war years.
Thank you!

My mother said that German submarines were being replenished near her home village (Ardhaisig on the Isle of Harris) during WW1 by "Norwegians".

When I visited Harris in 1948 some of the locals told me this was true, but none of them had actually seen a submarine. Wondering if this replenishment actually ocurred, or perhaps just another war-rumour.

There was an active Norwegian whaling station in or very near Ardhaisig during WW1. Do any forum members recall hearing of this activity?

Hi All, I am looking for some information on a ship I believe my husband's great grandfather to have been on during WW1. The ship was a merchant vessel by the name of Netherton and it was scuppered by UC18 on the 17th of February 1917 with no loss of life. The U-Boat itself was then sunk with all hands the following day. What I would like to know is whether it is likely that the crew of the Netherton would have been taken onto the U-Boat as prisoners and, therefore, perished when it, in turn, was sunk. Thanks for any help you can give me even if it only general in terms of common practice at the time.
Kind regards
