As an aside,

I have a Great Uncle who is also 92. He emigrated to the USA; got drafted; had to fight his own; was disowned by his European Family; the ship that landed him in Africa was torpedoed after his group disembarked; the stern only did return... I grew up five blocks from him and sat at his table at least three days a week since I was four years old. He will not make it to 93. He was, and is, a Combat Engineer, he could not read English, and could only interpret blueprints so we made him an engineer. He was proud to be an American and provided for his wife and two daughters and gave them a far greater life than even he thought was possible. I don't (actually I guess I do) intend to be melancholy but he won't see too many more days. Please pray for a soldier ready to go home.
If a type XXI submerged and sat on the bottom of the ocean in say, 175 ft. of water at the end of the war (1945) and the crew evacuated via the lock out chamber, is it possible that the sub would remain dry after all these years (68 years)?

Hello forum, this is my first posting on this forum and glad to see that such a forum exists. My question is simple, are there any books or movies that document what was found inside various u-boats that were either captured intact (like U-505) or raised (like U-2540 a.k.a. Wilhelm Bauer). I watched a u-tube video on the capture of U-505 and as you all know, the main focus was getting the enigma machine and code books and maps. That was well documented but I have not been able to find anything on the other boats. I am especially curious about U-2540, Is it true that 3 of her compartments were dry? This forum mentions a book entitled U-3503 - Dokumentation (availalbe in English) but a search for it on Amazon.com pulled up nothing. Thanks for checking this thread out and happy New Year.

Is there a WWII era film about submarines that includes this scenario: An allied ship is torpedoed by a German submarine at night. The U-boat surfaces and the deck crew take their stations atop the conning tower. They are soon joined by a second U-boat. The sound of voices can be heard across the water as the two captains hail one another. Cigarettes glow in the darkness.

This would most likely be an American film post-1942.

The uboat commander asks a man lying in a sick berth "if he believes in the fatherland" When the man confirms that he does, and repeats it after the question is asked again, he is man handled screaming into one of the tubes, and fired to the surface. there he is met by a waiting boat, but i seem to remember he spills the beans and tells them that it was a ruse by the Captain!

Can anyone out there tell me the name of the picture??? It is none of the regular suspects, and i have been working on this conundrum for 20 years or more. Did I imagine it, I am beginning to wonder...

The scene in question is where the bosun goes to deliver bad news to his men who are in the bunks celebrating over a victory, and he says they've lost 0-5 and there is no way of making the semi-finals to which the crew reacts angrily. I'm assuming that the sports talk is just code language for how well or badly the U-boats on patrol and their units did in attacking convoys, and in this case the bosun means they've just lost 5 of their own U-boats and sank none of the enemy convoy or fighting ships. Am I correct?

In the movie, the 1WO (who would have been Oblt z S G Groth on U-96's cruise under H L-W's command: Groth is shown in uboat.net biography as being from Mexico) is portrayed in a not very sympathetic manner. I don't know how this character is written in LGB's original book. Is the portrayal of Obtl. Groth in the movie similar to the personality of the real man/officer?

Ive just started playing SilentHunter 5 and to get in the spirit I broke out my The World at War collection and watched the episode "Wolf Pack: U-Boats in the Atlantic 1939-1944." Still a classic and still probably the most gripping documentary on the Battle of the Atlantic.

Anyway, starting in minute 9:09 and ending in 9:51 there is an excellent montage of footage of "the happy time." It seems to be cobbled together newsreel footage of returning U-Boats, sinkings, and awards being handed out. I have three questions about this footage that I hope one of the U-Boat experts here at U-Boat.net can answer.

1. From minute 9:18~9:28 we see a returning U-Boat. On the conning tower there are the numerals "105.812" - is this U-105? If so what does the "812" designate. Can someone I.D. this U-Boat?

2.From minute 9:47~9:50 we see a capt. who has received the Knights Cross (with Oak Leaves and Swords as well I think). He has what in America we might call an Amish beard. Can someone I.D. this captain?

3. Can anyone point me to an online source of stock German footage of U-Boats/U-Boat crews?

Cheers,
Trench

PS - this is a fantastic site. Im recommending all my PC gaming buddies to come over here to do some reading before playing SilentHunter 5.

Also was this based on something that really happened?

Finnish national television channel TV2 is airing movie "Meidän poikamme merellä" on June 5th 2010. The latter part of the movie, filmed in 1933, take place in a Navy wargame, "Iku-Turso" playing the part of enemy submarine. Interesting enough the same sub played the part of German submarine in "Morgenrot" (1933)! The movie is not available on DVD, only in VHS. So if you happened to visit Finland or know someone, make sure you get a copy of it. ;=)
