The grey,black and red color scheme was a pre-war/very early war . I think the the shipyards stopped this sometime in 1940 as the u-boat building program increased. The u-boats that had this paint scheme would have had it until the boat went into the dry dock for a complete overhaul and repainting. Stopping this 3 color scheme was done to cut costs and save time that the boat was on the slipways. I build R/C u-boats and all my boats get this color scheme because I like it the most and it gives more visability in the water when sailing.
