I use pastel chalks with low oil. Before I start to rust my subject I apply a light coat of gloss coat. This help me pull the chalk when I apply it. I use red brown and black mixed to get different shades of rust.It takes a little time to get use to doing it this way but the end result is outstanding. All of my subs have won several awards each and one even took best of show. Give it a try.
