paint used on U-boats

Hi

When I paint my model VII U-Baot, I want it to look as authentic as possible. I want to show weathering, repairs and so on. Can someone advise me on the sequence of paint used for U-boats? What colour coating was used on the base layer, was it red that would show through if the submarine was damaged? or were only shades of grey used from the first coat onward?

I'd really appreciate a reply from someone who knwos.
