Fate The boat was sunk on Feb 11, 1945 off New Jersey, USA in position 39.33N, 73.02W by Hedgehogs and depth charges from the American destroyer escorts USS Howard D. Crow and USS Koiner. 56 dead (all hands lost).
Das ist der orginaltext den man hier im Forum finden kann. Allerdings ist dieser nicht korrekt. Die Ursache weshalb U869 unterging ist bisher immer noch nicht eindeutig geklärt. Man vermutet das ein "Kreisläufer" das Boot versenkt hat, also ein Torpedo der nach dem Abschuss zum Boot zurückkehrte. Was mich allerdings wundert ist das unter dem Data-Sheet vom U869 dieser Text zu finden ist :
What happened to the boat?
Most probably she was hit by a circular torpedo run it seems, if so she was at least the 3rd U-boat to suffer that fate (U-377 in 1944 and U-972 in late 1943), there were of course no survivors.
I'll try to post more information here when I can, such as photos if possible.
Previously recorded fate (Last revised by US Coast Guard during June 2005)
Sunk 28 Feb, 1945 in the mid-Atlantic near Rabat, in position 34.30N, 08.13W, by depth charges from the US destroyer escort USS Fowler and the French submarine chaser L' Indiscret.
This attack was probably not against a submarine.
Another theory regarding the boat's fate off the US coast was a circular torpedo that accidentaly hit the boat. The Coast Guard explanation above is much more convincing.
Anscheinend ist hier vergessen worden das Data-Sheet von U869 auf den neusten Stand zu bringen. Nachdem Richie Kohler und John Chatterton das Boot eindeutig identifiziert haben, und während dieser Recherchen eindeutig bewiesen haben das der Schaden an dem Boot *nicht* von Wasserbomben stammt, sondern eindeutig von einem Torpedo, kann man also ausschliessen das Kriegsschiffe an der Versenkung beteiligt waren.
