U-boat numbering

Can anybody tell me if the U-boat ID numbers etc were ever shown on the hull during WW2 please. I see in films and magazines that they are always painted in bold letters on the conning tower, but gather from some previous correspondence on here that this was not always the case. If that is correct was the ID shown on any other external area of the boat? I am particularly interested in boats commissioned during 1944.

Any thoughts or comments will be most welcome.
