Hi again George!

I have come across some additional info on CHARLOTTE SCHLIEMANN,
and even if it does not bring any further details regarding surviving prisoners,
I would like to forward it to You George, hoping it might bring some further help.

C O Wolfgang Lüth departed Bordeaux with Type IXD2 "cruiser" U-boat U-181
on 23 March 1943 on what was to become a record voyage of 27 weeks in the
Indian Ocean. His first sinking on 11 April off the west coast of Africa brought
his personal score to 200 000 tons.
Proceeding around the Cape,he than sank 2 more merchantmen sailing
independently, before refuelling from tanker CHARLOTTE SCHLIEMANN,
and replenishing with mainly Japanese provisions, meanwhile allowing his men
aboard her for the luxury of a shower.
He continued northwards and sank another 5 independents off Madagascar,
the last the 10 500-ton British freighter SS CLAN MACARTHUR on 11 August.
Surfacing after she went down,he took wounded from one of her lifeboats aboard
the U-boat for first aid,and after returning them promised he would signal Mauritus
with the lifeboat´s positionwhen he had moved a safe distance away-as he did.
After a rendezvous to pick up the codebooks for the next period, from another
Type IXD2 entering the area,he began his return passage, rounding the Cape
westwards on 2 September.

Five "cruiser" U-boats remained in Indian Ocean after Lüth had left, patrolling
singly off East African Coast and Ceylon and off the entrance to the Red Sea
and Persian Gulf;using Jap naval bases at Penang and Singapore to resupply
and refit.
One had since been lost to aircraft attack, but together with 8 Jap Subs, chiefly
large I-class boats, they had taken a marginally larger toll of Allied tonnage
than all the boats stationed in the Atlantic together.
