Technology and Operations
Hi again George!
Thank You for Your very kind E-mail !
I can receive mail on my Outlook Express, but I do have some problems
sending mail on it,so I prefer to answer Your letter here,if You don´t mind.
It sounds very interesting to hear that You have succeeded in getting
Your hands on a copy of U-198:s logg book.I see on this exellent UboatNet
Web Site that she sank 13 ships!
Is this loggbook mayby a source that can answer Your research on the
fate of the shipmates to Your Grandfather?
I am a bit ashamed to say that I only have managed to find info on the sinking
of U-198,and regretably nothing of her cruise,in the Indian Ocean. As You,
I am sure already know,U-198 fell victim to a well co-ordinated hunt by a killer
group built around Escort Carriers HMS:s BEGUM and SHAH.
HMS frigate FINDHORN and RIN sloop GODAVARI sank U-198 NW of Seychelles
(03* 35´S - 52* 49´E.) aided by Avenger of 851 Sqdr. (SHAH).All hands lost.
(my sourcehrubb&Sainsbury:Royal Navy Day by Day.Page:227.)
Since You so kindly asked for my interests and if You could help me,I want to
mention that I am interested in all aspects of WW II naval warfare, but mayby
a little bit extra interested in Carrier Warfare in Pacific Theatre.
I do have a friend here in Sweden who is very good at looking up Second Hand
Books on the Internet. There is a book wich is out of print, and that he is going
to try to find on the Net,but if he does not succeed, mayby You could help me
out George?It is:
Rowher&Hümmelchen:Chronology of the War at Sea 1939-1945.
United States Naval Inst. (1992) I think 2nd edition. ISB nr:155750105X.
366 Pages.Well indexed.All major naval battles all theatres,including a lot of
Convoy Battles,and Wolf Pack Actions.
That is a book I really should like to lay my hands on!
In 1996 I bought Roskill:War at Sea (4 volumes, covering the Royal Navy WW II)
and Morison:Hist of US naval operations in WW II.(15 volumes).
I know that Roskill´s 4 volumes are VERY hard to get by today!
They have given me an immense source of info to draw from.
Mayby I am a bit old fashioned; But I love to read books, and find it a little bit
hard to surf around too much on the net :-).
I wish You Good Luck in Your continued research,George!
Kindest regards/Anders.
This forum is for discussing technological & operational matters pertaining to U-boats.
