ASDIC/sonar

The type XXI sonar I was referring to was the passive one. The XXI did carry a directional active ranging sonar, but that could be heard if the target and an escort were on approximately the same bearing. However, it only required a few pings to get the data.
You response brings up an interesting problem with nomenclature. The term ASDIC seems to imply active sonar only. The term sonar in modern usage is non specific and required the modifiers active or passive to fully define what is meant. The old term hydrophones implies only passive sonar. Further, active sonar requires a passive sonar capability for it to work, so all active sonar equipment can be used for listening.
