Heavy water is deterium oxide. It is an isotope of hydrogen which has an extra neutron in the nucleus. Thus it has double the atomic weight of ordinary hydrogen. This characteristic slows down neutrons in radioactive elements.

It was especially important in the production of plutonium. Preventing the shipment of the heavy water produced at Telemark thus disrupted the German bomb project.
