I do not think that the the Wire guided torpedo was due to a lack of interest but more of lack of technology of the times. Back during WWII electronics were not where they are today, every thing was big and bulky which added extra weight and ate up alot of much needed space. With wire guidance you need servo motors for the elevators and rudders and a transmitter etc. with the technology of the times this meant vacuum tubes and the like . Another problem was the wire breaking, here you need manufacturing to very exact and close tolerances or one very small binding in that wire spool means ......SNAP ! , a broken wire. Noise, this is another major problem. The germans used the same torpedo body with a different head attached to it,this was a major mistake as the counter rotating propellers made so much noise. The american mark 24 "FIDO " was built as a special weapon all it's own and did not use an existing torpedo body as such it had only one prop and this created much less noise. Must go I will add more later.
