Hi Jamie,
I have never heared of a detection by infra-red. The Kriegsmarine was afraid of a detection by infra-red and let the exaust pipe lay under surface to render more difficult the detection by infra-red. But there was never a detection by the Allies (as I Know).
And yes, the Metox had a radiation which could be detected. But the allies also never used this radiation. They had new frequencys of their radar and could detect the U-Boats without any alarm of the Metox. So the Kriegsmarine believed that the Allies used the radiation of the Metox and didn´t allow any more the use of Metox. The Kriegsmarine didn´t believed that it is possible to equippe an aircraft with cm-radar.
I hope you understood me and I could help you!
