David,
As I got my phD is Visuaol Science I feel I am in a position to answer this one. Cataract surgery of that period may well have removed the lens all together. The lens is responsible for filtering some of the infrared light (though not all), and the effect may well have been a mildly increased night vision. It would also have been blindness, after a while, as the retina is not good at coping with infrared light (thats why its filtered out). The other issue is that catarcats effect the elderly, in whome vision may well have deteriorated for all sorts of other reasons. So yes and no to answer your question, eyes with no lenses may be better at night vision, but probably only mildly, and not for ever. I would better trust a young pair of eyes than an older pair without lenses.
