Hello all:
I rode the USS WILLARD KEITH (DD-775), a 2200-ton destroyer during the last months of WWII. It carried two sets of infra-red signaling equipment which was used with the 12 signal lights, located on the aft port and starboard sides of the bridge.
A small transmitter was mounted on the 12 light, and a power cord was plugged into a 110VAC outlet nearby. A filter adapter (6") was fitted over the front of thel ight. We could communicate at night with other destroyers, and were undetected.
During "Operation Torch", invasion of North Africa, six U.S. fleet submarines from SubRon 50 in England, were used to scout suitable landing sites and notify the landing forces via "Mike Nan" infra-red signals.
Infra-red photography in the U.S. was available in 1935.
Have a nice day,
ROBERT M.
