Max depth US subs

Hello David
First let me explain, I am not an expert on submarine design so I only know about submarines and submarine design from what I read. Like you, I had it in mind that US subs were limited to around 300 ft depth - that is until that question was thoroughly explored in an earlier discussion on this forum which started off with a discussion of welding techniques used in submarine construction. I was suprised to learn that the Gato class could go far deeper than 150 meters and Kurt related an incident where Tang reached 750 ft.
Take a look at the thread titled "Welding" dated July 28th. You will probably be suprised at what you will see there, as was I. I would be interested in your comments after you have had a chance to look that thread over.
