U-boat lookouts

Did U-boat lookout use binoculars when on lookout?
Did they use them all the time?
How many lookouts normally were on duty?
How long were they on duty till they rotated out?

I'm interested in understanding better how Gemran lookouts found, or failed to find, Allied aircraft hunting them.
