Hi Phil
I think the gas masks filtered out the lethal amount of carbondioxide. But I guess if a certain amount of oxygen was used, not even the "Kalipatronen" (the german name for these gas masks) would help anymore.
Also, a U-boat could dive longer if the crewmembers who aren't used went to sleep and used Kalipatronen. The amount of oxygen used by the ppl is reduced and the Kalipatronen makes sure nobody gets poisoned. At least for a certain time period and if they work properly.
