Metox?....Biscay Cross??

Hello everyone.

At the present I am reading the EXCELLENT book 'Iron Coffins' and I have a few questions. The author, Herbert A. Werner writes about a device called the 'biscay cross' which was used to detect aircraft radar waves and alert the crew so that it gave them a few precious minutes to crash dive and escape. I was just wondering exactly how this system worked? Werner said that the 'cross' was continually rotated by on of the watch. He then spoke of an advance in this technology called 'Metox,' which acted the same way but was permanently fixed to the tower. It then turned out that this system which was supposed to save U-bootmen's lives, was ending them. It was discovered that this system was giving their position away to Allied aircraft, who could home in on their signals. If anyone has any info on how the 'biscay cross' and 'metox' worked, please tell me.
