Rainer,
What kind of facilities were there on board for filtering the fuel and lube oil? In DeFord\'s \"Marine Diesel Engineering\", the fuel was filtered, either through a screen, or thru a screen AND a centrifuge on it\'s way from the bunker to the day tank. The lube oil was treated the same way, but with extra steps and some time in a settling tank.
The \"smaller\" capactiy of the day tank would allow the LI to keep a better track on his fuel consumption, also.
