The Electro-boat was designed to have Walter turbine propulsion fuelled by hydrogen-peroxide. Faced by insurmountable delays in the development, in March 1943, an alternative design using the Walter-boat\'s streamlined hull with a powerful, but conventional, diesel-electric unit combined with very large battery capable of being recharged by using a schnorkel, the type XXl was born.

This W.Turbine, was not installed in the type XXI boats. They acchieved that underwater sprint speed on battery power and E-motors. RB
