Type XIV Schnorchels?

It is unclear to me whether the Type XIV boats ever had schnorchels installed. David Miller\'s book says yes, that U488 departed on its last patrol with one, while John White\'s U-tanker book says none were put on. Rossler\'s U-boat classic hints at it that they were installed. Well, folks, any more information? Thanks in advance for any replies.
